According to a Mexican study on Spirulina, while 1 gram of spirulina is ineffective, a dose of 4.5 grams per day has been shown to reduce blood pressure in individuals with normal blood pressure levels. Both men and women who were taking 4.5g of spirulina daily have reduced the rates of high blood pressure in just six weeks without any dietary changes.

This is thought to be driven by Phycocyanin - a pigment found in the spirulina that scientists have discovered possesses antihypertensive effects (it helps the blood vessels relax and dilate and lowers blood pressure)


  1. Manages sugar levels

Spirulina may be especially helpful in balancing blood sugar, and may even be as effective as diabetes medication in some instances. It may not only lower blood sugar but also HbA1c, which is a long term marker of blood sugar levels.

Some studies have shown that spirulina can significantly lower blood sugar levels and in some cases, it has outperformed popular diabetes drugs, including Metformin.

There are also some studies with evidence that spirulina can be effective in the control of glycemia in type 2 diabetes. In a study of 25 patients with this type of diabetes, 2 grams of spirulina led to a reduction in their blood sugar levels.

When someone with a sensitized immune system is exposed to a specific allergen, it will trigger the production of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. Studies suggest that spirulina stops the release of histamine, which is responsible for symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Consumption of spirulina may improve symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal itching, and nasal discharge.

Spirulina benefits have also been shown to reduce high blood cholesterol levels. It can lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while raising HDL (the “good”) cholesterol.

Several studies have shown positive effects in people with high cholesterol. It was found that 1 gram of spirulina per day has lowered triglycerides by 16.3% and LDL by 10.1%

This shows that consuming spirulina might be a great way to promote healthy circulation, modulate cholesterol and lipid profiles in the blood and even prevent the formation of heart disease. Everything without producing any harmful side effects.
